Wapiti Cabin is a rustic log structure open year-round for recreational enjoyment. It provides access to several trails for hiking and biking in the summer, and skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. The cabin can be accessed by vehicle in warmer weather, but snowy conditions may require a 6 mile trek on skis, snowshoes or snowmobile. Winter parking is at the Sage Creek Trailhead plowed parking lot off Hwy 191. Guests should call ahead to the Hebgen Lake Ranger District in the spring and fall to get information on road conditions. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities. |

Summer May 16 to December 1 For summer access from West Yellowstone, proceed north on Highway 191 for approximately 33.5 miles. Turn left on Taylor Fork Road/Forest Service Road 134 and proceed approximately 3.5 miles. Turn left on Forest Service Road 2522 and proceed approximately 1.5 miles. The cabin is located on the right side of the road. Winter December 2 to May 15: Wapiti Creek Road to the cabin is closed to all motorized vehicles. Snowmobile access to the cabin : From Sage Creek Trailhead parking area off of Highway 191, follow the newly relocated Big Sky/Carrot Basin Trail for 6 miles. Note: the cabin is located on the edge of a winter wildlife closure area. Off trail snowmobiling around the cabin is permitted only to the south of the access road (on the left side if traveling to and beyond the cabin) as shown in this map Wapiti Cabin Map . Here is a larger area Snowmobile Map . Non-motorized winter access (ski, snowshoe, etc.) : Taylor Fork Road is intermittently plowed, access and parking are not maintained for passenger vehicles. Recommended parking for Wapiti Cabin is at the Winter Sage Creek Trailhead just off of Hwy 191. Depending upon the condition of Taylor Fork Road, it may be possible to drive to the Wapiti Creek Road Junction. If so, park there and ski or snowshoe 2 miles to the cabin. Otherwise, park at the Sage Creek Trailhead parking area off of Highway 191, immediately south of the Taylor Fork Road and ski/snowshoe 6 miles to the cabin by following either Sage Creek Trail or Taylor Fork Road to Wapiti Creek Road. |

The cabin has cots to sleep up to four people. A wood stove is available for heat. An old fashioned wood cookstove is available and basic cookware, dishes, an axe, shovel, broom, mop and table with chairs are also provided. An outhouse is located outside and adjacent to the cabin. Firewood is supplied for the wood-burning stove only. Renters must gather their own wood for outdoor campfires. A corral is available for horses. No electricity or water is available. Guests must bring their own drinking water, flashlights and lanterns, bedding, matches, extra toilet paper, garbage bags and dish soap, among other necessities. The cabin will need to be cleaned and all trash removed prior to departure. |

Water is not available in the cabin; water obtained from nearby natural water sources should be treated prior to use Winter travel can be difficult due to deep snow, wind, low visibility and trail signs/markers being obscured by snow; always travel with others and be familiar with the area and traveling in avalanche terrain The cabin remains locked; on the last business day before a scheduled arrival, call the Hebgen Lake Ranger District office at (406) 823-6961 during business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) Grizzly bears frequent the area; store all coolers, food, beverages, stock feed, and garbage inside the cabin. Wapiti Cabin is situated on hilltop meadow in the Madison Range at an elevation of 7,000 feet. Beyond the meadow, guests at the cabin can see dense stands of evergreens and rugged mountain ridges. Wapiti Creek flows nearby. The area is known grizzly bear country; elk, moose and deer are also common. Birders may identify a large variety of bird species. |

The junction of Taylor Fork Road and Wapiti Creek offers several trailheads leading into the Cabin Creek Recreation and Wildlife Management Area. Mountain bikers will find several route options in the Wapiti Loops in Taylor Fork, including a 14-mile route that begins at the cabin. For winter sports enthusiasts, the Big Sky Snowmobile Trail passes right by the cabin. Offering some of Montana’s best backcountry snowmobiling. The area around Wapiti Creek also offers good terrain for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Snowmobilers must stay on the groomed Wapiti Creek Road 2522 route to the cabin. Cross- country snowmobile travel is prohibited along the entire route from lower Wapiti Trailhead to the cabin. Fall hunting season brings big game hunters to this area. |
